In a world that encourages people to focus on self, instead of others, or more importantly, God. Now, others and God should always come before self, and then God definitely comes before others. Although it’s important to be kind to other people, what should come first is obeying God’s commandments. There are a few verses in 1 Thessalonians that say this perfectly:
“On the contrary, we speak as men approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel. We are not trying to please men but God, who tests our hearts. You know we never used flattery, nor did we put on a mask to cover up greed–God is our witness. We were not looking for praise from men, not from you or anyone else…”
That was 1 Thessalonians 2:4-6 (NIV). I put the parts I wanted to focus on in bold. We shouldn’t attempt to change ourselves because of what other people want. Sometimes we can feel the urge to please people because we may want to be popular, to fit in, or any other number of reasons. It can be hard not to, but we have to remember that that’s not everything. True friendship, for example, is always far more important than simply being popular for a short period of time, to only be left in the dust later on.
God, on the other hand, will never abandon you. He’s the truest friend there is. Your friend.
