Have you ever heard a worship song that included lyrics that was something along the lines of “You alone God are worthy of our praise”, or simply “You are worthy”. If you haven’t, I have to admit that I am surprised. Whether it’s an old hymn written by Fanny Crosby or contemporary music by Chris Tomlin, lyrics like this have been in worship songs for a long time. Why? It may be because the words “God is worthy” is such a strong, unfailing truth. And this leads to another question: Why is God worthy?
Let us look, first, at what God is worthy of. A few examples are: our praise, our love, our devotion. You might be able to think of a few of your own, after we discuss why God is worthy of these things. So let’s get right to that.
For my first point, I would like to show you a verse. It’s from Revelation 4:11 (NIV):
You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.
This gives a few more examples on what God is worthy of (glory, honor, and power), but it also gives a reason as to why He is worthy: “…for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.” God created everything. He willed it, and the world came to be. He created us as well. If it wasn’t for God, we wouldn’t exist! God, the Creator of all, is worthy.
You may know that David wrote many (though not all) of the songs in the book of Psalms. This certain verse, Psalm 18:3 (NIV), is very interesting:
I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise, and I have been saved from my enemies.
First of all, this states that God is “worthy of praise”; another example! It also says this: “…and I have been saved from my enemies.” David “called to the Lord”, and God rescued him from his enemies! Allow me to put it his way; think of some issue you’ve been dealing with lately. You just need to pray (which is what David meant when he said that he called to the Lord), and God will give you the strength to overcome your “enemies”, whatever or whoever that may be. I think that the fact that God, who is the King of the universe, would do that for us, just another speck on the planet earth, is incredible!
One last example, from John 3:16 (NLT), a verse that should be familiar:
For God loved the world so much that He gave His one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.
God loved us so much that He did this. He loved you, even before you were born, so much that He sent His Son to die for you so that you could go to heaven to live with Him. How amazing is that? It was the ultimate sacrifice, the ultimate display of love.
To sum up those three points as to why He is worthy:
- He created everything.
- He protects us, gives us strength, saves us from our enemies.
- He loved us enough to send His only Son to take the weight of the world’s sins.
And after writing that, all I want to do is shout to the world: “He is worthy!”
