Something so simple and yet, somehow, so complex. Being ourselves. Why is that so difficult for us? Why do we feel the need to do this or that because it’s what our friends say is “cool” or just “looks good”. Like how some of us (okay, mostly girls) feel the need to keep up with the fashions–otherwise…we won’t look good? Okay, that’s a little off the mark. You see, we get so caught up in all of this that we begin to lose who we are. But Jesus didn’t just die for some clone of the world. He died for you.
We are each unique. And sometimes we struggle with that. People around us tell us that we’re weird because we’re different. Well, you want to know what would be weird? If we were all the same! But seriously, we buy into those lies. We feel insecure, and to get rid of that feeling, we do our best to look and act like everyone else.
And guess what? God made you different for a reason. I remember those polls that asked if I could change one thing about myself, what would it be? Maybe you don’t like the shape of your nose or the color of your hair or your height. But you know what? God made me and you just the way we are, and that’s the way I want to stay.
I do want to point this out, though. When I say be yourself, I’m saying that we shouldn’t try to conform to the world. That doesn’t mean we’re perfect just the way we are–far from it! We all need God’s saving grace.
You don’t need to change. God loves you: the real you. Nothing can ever, ever change that. He accepts you just the way you are. Pretty cool, right?
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–His good, pleasing, and perfect will. (Romans 12:2, NIV)
