What do you think of when you heard the word “idols”? The image of some statue that people bow down to probably comes to mind. Anyway, it’s something that, honestly, seems pretty crazy to us. Statues are man-made. They aren’t gods. They can’t speak, can’t listen, can’t do anything. You may think, “I would never worship something like that.” Well, we may not worship gold statues, but we certainly have our idols.
The last post I wrote was titled Daily Worship. It’s important to be worshiping God every moment of our lives; but if we have idols that we’re worshiping, that we’re giving priority over God, our worship of Him isn’t true.
And, unfortunately, many of us worship idols whether we realize it or not. We all have different ones. It could be your computer, TV, your relationships, books, your appearance, music…the list goes on and on. The thing is, our “idols” might not be bad things. Having a relationship isn’t necessarily bad, is it? But if it consumes your life, you’re not exactly focusing on God. It’s good to be concerned about your appearance, but it’s not something we should be obsessed with. It doesn’t mean that these are things we have to give up; they just shouldn’t be more important to us than God.

We usually worship something because doing it makes us “happy”, or we feel like if we can perfect it (like our appearance or a talent) we’ll be happy. But idols can’t give us joy. Really, they just make us emptier. They make us feel like they can offer something, when we’re only turning our backs on the one thing that can make us happy–God. His love.
If you’re feeling empty, relationships don’t hold the answers. Being beautiful can’t make you happy. Burying yourself in a book won’t hide that feeling. But God will take that emptiness and fill it–if you let Him.

Great post, really good message. I think people are way to into the whole celebrity culture. It’s awful that they call them “stars,” like we’re worshiping the “heavenly host” by being overly obsessed with them. But you’re also right that having interests isn’t necessarily bad, it’s only if we place them above God that there’s a problem.

Thank you! I totally agree. These “stars” and “idols” are people just like us with a God-given talent. And I’m sure God doesn’t mind if we enjoy watching American Idol or keeping up with our favorite actor, as long as it doesn’t become more important to us than our relationship with Him. Deuteronomy 32:16 says, “They made Him jealous with foreign gods and angered Him with their detestable idols.” We chase after these earthly things and worship them when, in reality, the only thing that can really satisfy us is God’s unfailing, unconditional love!
