The Age of Convenience

Everything in our world today is about convenience. How can we make our lives easier? How can we do this faster, and expend less energy while doing it? Some of the results of our desire for convenience our useful, and sometimes it’s downright ridiculous. Taking the car to travel to another state? Useful. Jumping in the car to drive two blocks? Not so much. Calling your friend who lives on the other side of the country? Useful. Texting your friend who lives next door? Pretty ridiculous. You get the idea.

It’s really easy to get wrapped up in this idea of convenience. We’d love it if everything in life was easy, but the simple fact is that it’s not. Some people think that because they’re Christians life should be all sunshine. We as Christians are filled with a joy like no other, that’s for sure. But we are in no way guaranteed that we will not face troubles in life. In fact, quite the opposite: The Bible tells us that we will face persecution and hard times.

Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, (2 Timothy 3:12, ESV)

Another problem faces us. When we are looking for convenience in life, we soon develop this attitude of avoiding difficult things no matter what. The thing is, God asks us to do hard things. If He hasn’t asked you yet, trust me, He will. Sometimes the things He asks you to do aren’t very convenient. We are face with the choice of doing the easy thing or following the will of the God of the universe. Easy choice, right? In reality, we often have a hard time trusting God.

We are overly concerned with our personal comfort. You know what? God is concerned about you too. He loves you more than you can even imagine, and He wants what’s best for you.  But He, unlike us, can see past the now and into the future–into all eternity. We’re constantly storing up our treasures here on earth. God wants us to store our treasure in heaven.

Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (Matthew 6:19-21)

Here’s my point: Convenience is okay. But sometimes the convenient thing can hurt us or others. Think about it: Abortion has to do a lot with convenience, for example. Moms-to-be don’t want to deal with the inconvenience of having a kid, and just like that, a life is lost. Thank God that the technology of today allows us the pleasures of convenience, but don’t let it get in the way of His plan for you. Certainly don’t chase after convenience so much that you go directly against His will.

Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it. (Matthew 7:13-14, NIV)
