“What can I do for God? How can I do anything important for Him? I’m just me. What can I do?”
I have these thoughts a lot. Sometimes I just feel so small, and I wonder if anything I do will ever make a difference. Can God really use me (and you) to do anything important for Him?
Unfortunately, our answer is often no. That’s the wrong answer, and it may came from a confused perspective of what can be considered “important”.
“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ (Matthew 25:34-40)
When I think of what God considers important, this passage comes to mind. These people (the righteous) are confused by what the King has said, because they’ve never taken Him into their home and fed Him, clothed Him, etc. At least, that’s what they think. But the King says that if they did any of these things for someone, they were doing it for Him.
The world’s idea of being important is (like most things related to the world) quite self-centered. For example, you’re important if everybody knows your name. In other words, important often equals popular.
I have to disagree.
The passage above lists a lot of seemingly unimportant things. Feeding and clothing people, looking after the sick, visiting those in prison–those don’t seem to be a big deal for us. But these little deeds that we do without flaunting our “righteousness”–God sees them. He sees them and counts them as if we did those very things for Him.
So what can we do? We can start by doing the little things. Even if you only touch one person’s life by doing these things, God is cheering you on. You can do so much for God just by being selfless, humble, and willing to do things for those around you.
Sometimes we wonder why God would choose us to work through. After all, it’s a big world. There are so many other, more “important” people He could use. Well, God has a unique plan for each of us, and throughout the Bible we see Him working through people who didn’t think they were good enough (Moses, Gideon, etc). It’s true, most of us aren’t good enough–on our own. God, however, can work through us to do incredible things.
And who knows? God might call you to do things that go more along the lines of what we think of as “important”. And do not think for a moment that He can’t use you to accomplish His purposes.
I am able to do all things through Him who strengthens me. (Philippians 4:13)
Everything is possible with God. Never doubt that!
