What makes something beautiful?
What makes us pause to watch the sunset? What causes us to take a moment to watch the slow fade of those vibrant colors?
And why are kittens so irresistibly cute?
There could be any number of reasons as to why these things are considered beautiful. To put it simply, however, I think that there’s something in the glory of a sunset, the harmony of a melody, and the sweetness of a kitten that speaks to us. It’s a glimpse of perfection in an imperfect world. As close as you can get to perfection in this world, at any rate.
Here’s the thing: God see us–you and me–as beautiful. And I don’t know about you, but there are often times when I don’t feel beautiful. After all, we’re human. We’re flawed. We continually soil ourselves with sin, so how is it that God sees us as beautiful?
It’s because–if we are saved–He sees us through the blood of Jesus. We are made clean through the sacrifice of His Son. We are beautiful because of what He has done for us, because of His great love for us. We, the church, are His bride. The Song of Songs is a poem of love between us and God. Ours is a love story: a beautiful, unending love story.
Life can get you down. It can be discouraging, hurtful, and leave you wondering if God really loves you. He does, more than you can imagine! If you ever find yourself asking that, just remember what He’s done for you. He gave His life just to be with you, to save you. He loves you, and always remember: Even if you can’t understand it, you are beautiful in His eyes.
