Did you know that all of us have incredible, personalized gifts from God? It’s an odd question, because, really, so many of the things that make up our lives are gifts from our heavenly Father–including that breath you just took! But in this case, I’m talking about a specific gift that God has given each of us, whether you realize it yet or not: talent.
Now, talent is a funny thing. We like to compare our gifts. And, in most cases, we find our friend’s talents to be more interesting, more exciting, or more fun than our own.
I have friends who are extremely gifted artists. Other friends are brilliant at school. Still others have less obvious gifts like being able to strike up a conversation with absolutely anyone, and make a friend out of a complete stranger. I would be lying if I said I haven’t been jealous at times.
Another problem is the simple fact that we call these gifts “talents”. In God’s eyes, yes, I think He would consider this type of gift to us to be a talent. But, from a worldly perspective, I think “talent” and I think “American Idol” and things like that. We think that, to be talented, we have to be the best of the best, and we need some outrageously awesome skill to be truly considered talented.
Talent is…Jesus, shining from within your heart to the whole world.
You know what? If you can encourage a friend who’s having a bad day, you are talented. If you can inspire and uplift someone by praying with them, you are talented. If you seem to easily find ways to share the Gospel, you are talented. If you enjoy helping out at church and in your community, you are talented. If you are an athlete, a musician, an artist, and you’re not the best of the best, you’re still talented. Whatever your gift(s) is, God has given it to you for a reason. Just because your gift doesn’t seem as “cool” as someone else’s, or because you aren’t as skilled at something, it doesn’t mean your gift is any less special.
You are the only you–and God, the Creator, loves you just the way you are. And He made you the way you are for a very specific, very special reason; one you may not be able to comprehend yet.
Talent is God working through you; it’s Jesus, shining from within your heart to the whole world.
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. (James 1:17)
