This is for the Little Guys

A few days ago WordPress posted an article titled the following: The WordPress Bestseller List. It’s basically a compilation of bestselling authors who use WordPress–and, might I add, the list was pretty impressive. Seeing all those names makes me wonder, could that ever be me? Might I ever have hundreds of thousands (dare I say millions?) of followers and receive hundreds of comments on every post? The answer, most likely, is no, and I accept that. However, the thoughts are still there. And who doesn’t have thoughts like that from time to time? The rich, the famous, the people whose lives simply turned out “better” than ours–it’s easy to wish that we were in their position.

And as we begin to lose ourselves in counting the blessings of others, we quickly forget our own. Most of us are not destined to be rich or famous (though some are), but God does have a plan for us. I can assure you, His plan is better than anything we could come up with on our own.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11)

Sometimes, life just doesn’t seem to be going well.

Maybe you just got fired or someone in your family is terminally ill. Maybe you failed a test despite studying hard or you get in a fight with your best friend. Maybe you’ve simply had a bad day and then you look up and see that your neighbor has just bought a Porsche. Sometimes, to be blunt, life stinks.

Here’s the thing: We live in a fallen world. Sin entered it in the Garden of Eden, and it has thrived ever since. Thanks to sin, life just isn’t fun sometimes. There’s pain, sorrow, heartbreak, betrayal…you get the point.

But that is why receiving the gift of salvation is so life-changing. Our sins have been forgiven. We are made new through God’s unfailing, unconditional love.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! (2 Corinthians 5:17)

However, this doesn’t mean our lives are perfect and happy and good in every way. We still live in a sinful world, and we still inhabit fleshly bodies that have sinful desires. Thus our life here on this earth will not be perfect. We will not always be happy. But we will be joyful. We will have the love of God in us, and that outweighs any heartbreak, any disappointment that we may face here.

Back to my original point:

From our perspective, God’s plan often does not seem to be the best one. But think about it. If we got our way, we’d probably have all the money in the world. We’d be powerful and everyone in the world would know our name and look up to us. We’d be able to get anything we wanted.

This may seem a little silly, but have you ever seen the Veggie Tales movie Madame Blueberry? Basically, it’s the story of a blueberry who isn’t happy and thinks that if she buys more stuff she will be. The moral of the story is to be thankful for what you have; also, that it’s not the stuff in life that matters. There are things in the world that money can’t buy.

And that’s just my point. If we were to lay out the plan for our life, it would include all sorts of worldly things that are supposed to make you “happy”. Material wealth and fame can’t replace a relationship with God, though. Beauty, money, popularity–all these things fade. But love never fails.

God has a unique plan for each and every one of us. Whatever that plan is, whether the world will know our name or not, we can be assured that it is the best plan for us and one that will bring glory to our Lord and Savior.

So you know what? It’s okay if I don’t have a ton of followers. I’m really happy when someone takes the time to encourage me and share their thoughts. But the people in my life that love me and my relationship with God are what matter most to me. And even if I was Freshly Pressed (wouldn’t that be cool? lol), that would still be the case.

  1. Well said! So true, I think deep down we all crave fame and fortune at different times but yes! God knows what we can handle, and what will be good for our souls I guess.. and it’s so wonderful to have deep, inner contentment that isn’t dependent on all those fleeting earthly things that promise so much yet can be so empty.
Although, if God calls us ‘small ones’ to be ‘famous’ for His glory, we’ll obey I guess – and no doubt that would be challenging in its own way!

    • Yes! If filled with God’s love, the ‘little guys’ can be more content than the famous and wealthy will ever be. We just need to trust God’s plan for our lives, wherever it takes us.

I know exactly what you mean.
Everytime I log into my blog and see that I may only have 1view for that day
my heart is content (although it would be cool to have thousands of thousand of followers lol)
keep on doing what your doing! God has put in my heart that if we at least reach one person, we are expanding the kingdom of God here on earth, and that is enough! 🙂

    • Thanks for the encouragement, Victoria! I couldn’t agree more. We tell ourselves that a hundred (or a thousand) views would be better than one, but as long as that one view meant something to someone, it’s worth it. Excellent verse, by the way 🙂

  3. Great post here. Jeremiah 29:11 is like my poster verse. Years ago it kept me going through a very difficult time. Now, I am living those words. And i agree. My point in blogging is as yours; God wanted me to do this even as I fought it. If one person is changed by something God has given me to write, then it is all worth it.
